Mineral and offshore activities in southern Namibia have brought a new lease
of life for the Port of Lüderitz, which in recent years has depended
mainly on the fishing industry.
The Port of Lüderitz, in southwest Namibia, was taken over by Namport
from TransNamib Harbours on 1 April 1995. Namport has since invested in
a major development of the harbour to handle larger vessels and more traffic.
Though traditionally, Lüderitz has been a fishing port, serving the
needs of the Namibian fishing industry at a national level, more recently
the port has also catered for the needs of the offshore diamond industry.
Today, thanks to a range of modern industries that have sprung up in southern
Namibia, Lüderitz has the potential to serve as an important gateway
and logistics base for various mineral operations as well as the petroleum
industry.
