Strategic Benefits - Why Use the port
of Lüderitz?
Key benefits of the
Port of Lüderitz:
• The Port of Lüderitz's strategic location on the south-west coast of Namibia makes it an
important base not only for the fishing industry, but also for the offshore diamond and mining
industry. The port is also an important shore base for oil and gas drilling operations off the
southern coast.
• The Port of Lüderitz offers excellent logistical services and links to other towns in
Namibia and South Africa
• For the fruit industry's exports to Europe, particularly the grapes from Aussenkehr and from the
Northern Cape Province, shipping from Lüderitz saves more than two (2) days in delivery time.
• In term of infrastructure, a new 500m quay provides cargo handling and container facilities for
importers and exporters, while a new mobile harbour crane can handle containers and break-bulk cargo up to 64t.
• The ever-increasing mining activities in the area, including oil exploration, bear testimony to the
need to provide separate and dedicated bulk facilities to cater for the mining and related industries. As part
of its future development, therefore, Namport is considering options that include looking into the feasibility
and viability of such expansions.
• Lüderitz's rich heritage and the new Waterfront development also provide opportunities for the
local community to develop tourism in the town.
